Ailsa’s travel theme this week is autumn. Serendipity at work! Enter our talented and generous photographer/kayaker friend, Michael. From Albany, he writes about his return to Indian Lake in the Adirondacks. 🙂
MK: Julie missed the sadly truncated 10/2 paddle at Indian Lake, but I marked it for a return at the first opportunity. Optimal weather conditions occurred Sunday, 10/12, and we launched early, just as the last puffs of morning mist were burning off. Color past peak, many bare maples, but the paper birch/yellow birch/beech gang combined to impart a school-bus yellow cast, splashed here & there with orange and red.

A big hit! At the end, Julie proclaimed it “Paddle of the Year!” For my part, a total photo op—even changing lenses while a loon dove, just in time to get a wing-spreading sequence) when it popped up.

A large gallery is posted to Julie’s site. Many shots of her, beaming, on the water! My favorite occurred late, when she rolled up her hat as if to adopt the habit of a French Daughter of Charity, stroking her chin like Rodin’s “Thinker.”

… much to the amusement of Monsieur Merganser:

The part of the lake I missed 10/2 (almost all of it!) this time produced endless delights.

Travel Theme: Bountiful

“Color showing up in spots here,” writes our photographer/kayaker/eagle-stalking friend Michael, in Albany. “Hit paydirt today in the central Adirondacks!”

Yep, we’d say so. All photos courtesy of the bountiful talent and generosity of Mr. Kalin, today’s guest blogger. Here are a few of Michael’s photos from his recent paddle on Indian Lake. Check out his earlier (amazing!) 2G3K post featuring his favorite eagle family in Hudson River Islands State Park.

MK 10/4: “The first is the launch site when I arrived, bathed in fall hues—this is legit, no faux colors! That’s Snowy in the background, under clouds, which clung to the mountain most of the time. Friday’s shot was one of the few moments when the dome was not clouded over.”

MK 10/4: “Both photos show exposed sandy/rocky features that are usually under water. Although a natural lake, the level was raised by damming many decades ago, drawn down in fall to allow capacity for next spring’s melt. Don’t know how close this elevation is to the historical pre-dammed lake, but it certainly makes for friendly paddling. So many beachy areas for taking out on a whim, so many rock formations to explore!”
