August 17 Paddling back to HHYC on a balmy Wednesday “Kayak Night,” we encountered huge schools of bunker—and August’s magnificent “Sturgeon” (almost-full) Moon. Native Americans gave distinctive names to each recurring full moon, and Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior agree that sturgeon fishing is best right about now.
Some tribes call it the “Red Moon,” thanks to its reddish appearance through August’s sultry haze.
Gorgeous photos. I will have to remember the Sturgeon moon.
Thanks so much for visiting, L! Harvest Moon is the next one up. We know you’re into urban planning, but perhaps you’d enjoy peeking at the Farmers Almanac anyway, heehee! Each month’s moon is named and explained. Interesting to us geeks 🙂 🙂
Lovely!
It was. And in our “backyard” too!
I know I’m always talking about memories…it’s just that you trigger that! So I’m thinking about a tiny place I used to spend time at in Riverdale that was actually on the water, (other side of the RR tracks) and on summer evenings, sometimes I’d see a crescent moon hanging over the Palisades…that majestic line of rock, the water, maybe Venus nearby, it was magic! And it has to be even better when you’re ON the water, instead of beside it.
You are so right! I think what makes that scene extra special is also realizing the moon’s role in the waters’ life. The two shining together are rather poetic, don’t you think?
How wonderful! 🙂
“Supermoon”coming right up! 11.14.16 Maybe we’ll both be lucky enough to see it.
